AN INTRODUCTION TO RURAL HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION

Rural Health Care Foundation (RHCF), has been providing affordable primary healthcare services to low-income rural and underprivileged communities in West Bengal. Through out-patient healthcare centres set-up in densely populated areas with insufficient quality healthcare facilities, we help the disadvantaged people live with better health and dignity.

Granted with Special Consultative Status with United Nations ECOSOC, our organisation has been effectively working to counter the staggering inadequacies in Indian healthcare sector. Our focus is on accessibility, availability and affordability and we have a unique and innovative service delivery model which is scalable and replicable. We have also adopted 'sustainable philanthropy' to ensure continuous service towards our communities while reducing our dependency on donors.

Started with one centre in Mayapur, we have grown to have 20 primary healthcare units - 15 in rural West Bengal and 5 in Kolkata. They are equipped with General Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry and Homeopathy departments and a pharmacy with about 200 kinds of generic medicines.

Patients are provided with medical consultation at Rs.80 and free 1-week supply of medications. Free cataract and pterygium surgeries are provided, in collaboration with Rotary Eye Hospitals, with patients only bearing the travelling expenses. We also provide subsidized spectacles.

Till date over 2.2 million patients have been treated at the RHCF healthcare centres.

We are still looking to expand our reach and provide primary care to more needy communities. We need to set up new units and also ensure proper functioning of existing ones. The task at hand is huge and we require constant funding for purchasing medical equipment, hiring medical and non-medical staff, setting up infrastructure at the clinics, purchasing medications etc. Thus, with a focus on effective medical services for our rural and underserved communities, we are seeking to connect and partner with benevolent and generous donors and funders.

Efforts are focused on quality care in low cost so that, despite the financial constraints, our communities can receive the care they need and deserve.
