The health care sector in India is plagued with poor infrastructure, long wait times, high diagnostic costs and extensive travel for treatment. While 68.84% of the Indian population resides in rural areas, only 3% of medical professionals are available in these areas. Rural poor fall victim to unauthorized and unqualified medical practitioner (quacks) who extract large sums of money for ineffective treatment. Travelling to private hospitals located in urban areas can be both tedious and extremely expensive. In urban areas, quality treatment provided by private practitioners are unaffordable for underprivileged people. Lack of proper medical care makes the underprivileged communities vulnerable to various diseases, affecting their quality of life, as well as their very limited income.
We set up a chain of out-patient primary healthcare clinics in healthcare-deprived densely populated regions of West Bengal. Focused on accessibility and affordability of medical care, our centres offer medical consultation at Rs. 80 along with 1-week supply of free medication to the underserved communities of West Bengal. The centres are also opened in areas with proper transporation to ensure patients' easy connectivity with our units. High-quality of care results in effective treatment, without affecting their limited income. Rural Health Care Foundation has a sound and scalable service delivery model that is impactful towards low-income communities. We are also striving to make each rural centre as a self-sustaining unit, to help deliver services with reduced external funding.
Rural Health Care Foundation draws inspiration from the Late Arun Nevatia (1965-2013), symptomatic of the undying spirit of man. Diagnosed with Cancer at the tender age of 10, his early days were spent through the pains of chemo-therapy and radio-therapy. During this phase a sense dawned upon him that it was the power of affordability in terms of good doctors and expensive medicines that he is battling this disease, which is beyond the reach of many.
An urge to reach out to the millions who have been deprived of medical assistance due to poverty kept bothering him. This urge made him uncomfortable, as a result of which he decided to discontinue his business. All his present and future financial achievements seemed to him to be completely baseless since he realized that monetary gains will never bring him true happiness. His urge turned to action. Along with his elder brother Anant Nevatia, Arun founded RHCF, opening its first primary health care centre at Mayapur in Nadia District of West Bengal.
Seeing the driving force of Arun, Padmashree Dr. S.M.H ADVANI agreed to become Chief Patron of the trust. The trust has tie-ups with many eye hospitals and provides free cataract operations. Cleft lip/palate operations are also arranged free of cost. This tree of efforts is sure to yield fruits when people start to live a healthier life in rural areas.

Our vision is to set up primary health care centres in the remotest corners of India, replicating our current service delivery model. We intend to scale up and establish 25 additional centres in the next five years in the most rural areas of West Bengal, and over 100 new centres in the next ten years, throughout the length and breadth of our country. The provision for a mobile hospital equipped to provide basic medical services at the doorstep of the poorest is also envisioned.
Our mission is to eradicate the lack of health care facilities in rural India by creating a chain of primary health care units that offer high quality, affordable outpatient care in low income, densely populated regions, where health care delivery by the state is sparse.
